Teign Ladies 2nd Team Match Reports

18/03/2017

With only 2 games left to play Teign Ladies 2s travelled away to Dart 2s in what always proves to be a competitive, well-fought match. Dart started well, working the ball round their defence and midfield with ease and speed but were unable to make much headway into the Teign half. Teign got the first goal of the game, from a quick attack from Georgia Burridge that caught Dart on the back foot, some quick passing between Vicky Cave and Nikki Taylor found Marnie Woodley in the D, who squeezed a reverse stick shot passed the Dart keeper into the goal.  From this point Teign had greater procession and were able to create chances on goal. Debutant Meg Willocks-Watts was unfortunate not to score with some fine attempts on goal. Dart equalised with a goal coming from a break in play where a long ball found an unmarked Dart player who placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal just past an outstretched Steph Hall in goal.

The Dart defence were holding off the Teign attack but they were able to win a short corner towards the end of the first half. Vicky Cave slotted the ball home from a straight strike from the top of the D.

The second half started in a similar fashion with both Teign and Dart keeping the pressure up, however Dart came out with some more energy in the second half with some leading runs down the pitch into Teign’s half. With 10 minutes from the end of the game, Dart created a few chances, one of which led to scrappy goal that Teign were able to defend. Despite several attacks and a few penalty corners Teign were unable to find that elusive winner. Teign defended well, and despite Dart being awarded a Penalty Stroke, were kept at bay.  Moments from the end of the game Dart won a short corner, Teign again defended with everything making the final result 2-2. Player of the match was awarded again to Georgia Burridge for another top performance.

Teign Ladies 2s entertained Dartmouth Ladies at home on Saturday, but only managed to wrestle a single point from a hard-fought and tense fixture.A strong Dartmouth side started brightly and subjected Teign to some sustained pressure for the first 20 minutes, forcing a number of couple of corners and several chances from open play. Teign managed to prevent Dartmouth scoring with some stubborn defending from Emily Judge, Em Youldon and Michelle Judge, and a number of good saves from Jo Day in goal.

Against this run of play, Teign broke quickly from within their 23 metre area to set Marnie Woodley free down the left hand side, drawing in several Dartmouth defenders before playing a slightly lifted ball towards the Dartmouth keeper to find Player of the Match Georgia Burridge free to strike home in typical style. This was followed by a much more settled period which took the blues through to half-time ahead.

The second half was almost a reverse of the first. For 20 minutes, Teign applied steady pressure to Dartmouth’s defence, even with Dartmouth going one down due a personal penalty, Teign were unable to make the most of the chances and short corners gained. Dartmouth then rallied and this time were able to provide a through ball that found their young striker who was lucky to convert from a very difficult angle, leaving the last 10 minutes as a nail-biting, end-to-end affair with chances to win the game missed by both sides.

An excellent game of hockey, both sides enjoying a competitive but fair game.

After a few disappointing results, despite increasingly positive team performances, Teign Ladies 2s hit the road this week to play Exe 4s a team just a point above them in Petroc 1 Division..

After a good warm up, there was a sense of determination within the team and Teign started the game with excellent intensity quickly turning over the ball from the Exe push back. Teign kept the ball well with large spells of possession and good transfers around the back and midfield forcing the Exe press to work hard, with most of the first 35 minutes spent in the Exe half. One such period of possession culminated in an excellent ball from the Teign midfield, finding free players in the Exe D, Teign forced Exe into making a mistake and a penalty corner was awarded.  Vicky Cave slipped the ball left to Emily Judge, who quickly struck the ball at goal, Lori Tilley was on post and deflected the ball into the net.

Soon after another opportunity from Connie Longrigg driving into the D and feeding Tilley again led to another good save from the keeper and the rebound just going wide.

The second half started with a long period of Teign dominance and possession clearly spurred on by their goal. Exe did well to withstand this period of pressure.  Teign continued to work hard in all positions and had a number of counter attacks, breaking forward at different times and working hard to tidy up the loose balls, break down play in midfield and then feed the forward line. The final ten minutes was a tense affair, with roughly equal defensive and attacking duties carried out by both teams. On one counter attack, Exe managed to catch Teign on the back foot and after some good passing were able to find the back of the net.

Stand-in Keeper, Marnie Woodley, kept the scores level with some fine saves, not bad for her first game in pads.  MoM was awarded to Connie Longrigg for yet another solid performance.

Although disappointed in not managing to get the win, Teign can feel proud of the steely team performance put in to get a point away from home against a very solid team, and will draw confidence from this result to take in to next week’s game at home against Dartmouth at 12:00 pm, all support welcome.
