In the final home game before the Christmas break this week, Teign faced a young and
skilful Bristol University side and although they had early chances and a lot of play in the
second half they lost out 1-4.
Teign started well and had a good spell of early chances as the midfield found space to pass
the ball into for forwards Jess Grandfield, Jackie Brooks and Laura Tranchant to run onto.
Young Megan Watts made her debut league appearance for the first team and looked
spritely and positive upfront hassling the Bristol defence and causing trouble!
In defence, Teign worked tirelessly and produced some first class defending throughout the
match. However, Bristol were persistent and the speed of their attacks allowed them to force
errors in the Teign defence and a couple of well worked goals saw them take a 0-2 lead into
The second half saw more attacking play from Teign but it was Bristol who got on the
scoreboard again as a sloppy pass in midfield allowed a Bristol player to intercept and run
into the circle firing a shot past Teign keeper Hazel Tranchant 0-3.
Back up the other end player of the match Ellie Brooks won her team a penalty corner and
then got herself on the scoreboard with a drag flick into the top left corner, 1-3.
With momentum in Teign’s favour they began creating more chances as Claire Rochelle
commanded the midfield, linking well with the forwards with fine passages of play. A skilful
run from Claire won another penalty corner, up stepped Ellie again but Bristol were wise to
the drag flick and closed her down much quicker on the top of the circle deflecting the ball
high over the goal. As time began to run out for Teign, confusion in defence saw a soft goal
increase Bristol’s tally to 4.
Not the result Teign had deserved or been hoping for but lots of positives to take to their final
game before Christmas – away to Plymouth Marjons on Sat 16 th December 11:30am start.
